Impact of FGA’s Humanitarian Programs:

Since August 2013, FGA in partnership with World Food Program (WFP) has been supporting vulnerable groups of people through humanitarian projects in Eastern Afghanistan. The partnership was started with Food for Work Program to assist the food insecure communities in Kunar Province and expanded to seasonal support programs (CBT and Food) targeting returnees and their host communities in drought affected districts in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. The total number of beneficiaries, haven supported by FGA operations are 52,990 households or 370,930 persons.

The project supported 45,218 returnee families and 7,772 vulnerable from host communities in the most difficult, insecure and drought affected districts. This operation contributed to objective # 1 of Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) strategic plan as 52,990 families received life-saving food assistance. The FSAC response focuses on two major live saving priorities: (a) Food assistance: Cash, voucher or in-kind food distribution based on market and situation analysis. Food basket cost for a family of 7 members for one month has been set at $ 90 or AFs 6000 to cover 2100 Kcal/person/day. (b) Livelihood Protection Support: Crop seeds (wheat, maize, pulses and vegetable) and Fertilizers. In-addition livestock support includes vaccination and treatment of livestock against disease outbreak and emergency feeding support, Small scale poultry activities.

The FGA’s humanitarian assistance was provided based on the priority of Afghanistan Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP). The last HRP covers the period of 2018-2021. According to HRP, drought affected almost 6.2 million rural populations in 2018. Out of this figure 6.2 million rural populations are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. FSAC targeted 3.9 million people in 22 worse affected provinces for live-saving and livelihood protection assistance in 2018. FGA as active partner of FSAC could managed the live saving assistance to 13,716 families or 96,012 people in 2018, and to 36,502 families or 255,514 people in three provinces in 2017.

Achievements in 2018:

In 2018, FGA signed five contracts with WFP for total service cost value of USD 117,879 (AFN 9,017,676). Through partnership with WFP, the FGA have supported 13,716 households (96,012 population) with live-saving assistance in three provinces (Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar) in Eastern Afghanistan. Out of total beneficiaries, 7800 HHs (54,800 people) were supported through Cash voucher and 5916 HHs (41,412 people) with food distribution program. The total cash value distributed to beneficiaries is USD 1,322,130, and total distributed amount of mixed food is 956.43 MT. Out of 13,716 beneficiaries, 2800 HHs supported in Nangarhar, 500 HHs in Laghman and 500 HHs in Kunar provinces. Out of total 11,716 returnee’s households, 10,916 HHs (76,412 people) are undocumented and 800 HHs (5600 people) are documented returnees, and 2000 households (14,000 people) were from host communities. In-addition, the project support 93,012 people, 77,770 people are male and 18,242 are female beneficiaries.

Achievements in 2017:

FGA in partnership with WFP contributing in achieving FSAC objective one by providing live saving assistance to 36,502 vulnerable households(33,502 Returnees and 3000 vulnerable from host communities). Out of 33,502 returnee families, FGA provide assistance to 21,948 undocumented and 11,554 documented returnees families. The undocumented returnees do not receive UNHCR assistance and they return mostly in conflict and drought affected districts. The FGA humanitarian program help this group of people to be integrated in their home villages and be targeting for development assistance. FGA also targeted the most vulnerable families of host communities for humanitarian assistance in the drought affected districts. As result of FGA’s operations in the most difficult districts in three provinces (Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar), (a) the most vulnerable group of people received food for their 3 months consumption. (b) Essential food commodities prices in the local market is reduced as injection of the surplus food through implementation of the project, and (c) Food insecurity rate is educed in drought affected areas. During 2017, out of total 36,492 families’ (or 255,444 people) beneficiaries, FGA has supported 35,016 families in Nangarhar, 981 families in Laghman, 495 families in Kunar. The total value of FGA five contracts with WFP was US$ 178,624. Through 2017 operation, FGA could manage the identification of 36,492 vulnerable families using WFP vulnerability criteria in Eastern Afghanistan, and have also managed the distribution of 3.29 million US dollar cash and over 4000 MT mixed food in in provincial centers and most difficult districts in Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar provinces

Achievements in 2013 - 2016:

The impact of FFW project are (a) 2272 vulnerable families got their food for their 3 months’ consumption; (b) 15,904 residents have improved access to health and other government service facilities, (c) 3500 Farmer have access to irrigation during the watering session, (d) food prices is reduced by injection of more food in the province. The key outputs of FGA operation are (58.41km) road reconstructed, (12.6 km) irrigation system (canal and Karize) are improved and 204m gabion protection wall built. The operation produced job opportunities for over 2000 labors and also protected agriculture land from disaster of flood. Through this operation 445.5 MT and US$ 92,681 are distributed to over 2200 families. Out of total beneficiaries 2272 families was supported in Kunar and 500 in Nangarhar.
